Philosophical argument - What is SOUL?

PHILOSOPY OF SOUL

Disclaimer: This article is expression of my personal opinion with life experience and study of different faiths. There is no intention to hurt anyone's sentiment or prove wrong but trying to enhance my own understanding.

What is soul?

Before beginning lets see some definitions:

In Sanskrit the equivalent word on "Soul" is "Atma". It means self, your own self or pointing to your being.

In Oxford dictionary of English explains "Soul" is defined as the spiritual part of a person, believed to exist after death.

In Hindi dictionary the equivalent word for soul is "aatma" which is defined as self.

In Greek the equivalent word for soul is "psyche" which means life.

In my opinion there was a wrong understanding in English Philosophy of the word "spirit" to be extra phenomenon or being capable of existing outside the human body. It is not clear to me what is the spiritual part. The Greek and Eastern philosophy matches a bit. We will also see the Islamic philosophy as well.

Soul is a part of you and me which differentiates between living and non-living. Senses enables us to experience life. Modern science says event plants and micro-organism have senses to identify their food.

The soul means "self" or "life" in most of the languages. Nafs in Arabic or Athma in Sanskrit points inwards to your own being or your own self. When we talk about own self, each one of us are so different. What makes us so different? What shapes your personality? Your personality is your soul. The senses which translates the experiences in your brain and records it (sub-consciously or consciously) becomes your soul. Each one of us have different experiences in life which shapes us. That is why being your own self is interconnected with the senses which perceives experience you go through in life.

However, in Quran the word "Rooh" is mentioned for life. If we take the equivalent word to Rooh as Psyche from Greek, lets try to understand from Quran the event where Allah made Adam and for the first time made him come to life.

(QURAN 15:29) When I have completed shaping him and have breathed into him of My Spirit,19 then fall you down before him in prostration."

The above verse is command to all other being present at the time of Adam coming to life to prostrate. Now the event of Adam coming to life is described as breathing him spirit (rooh/pysche). Now if we take Oxford dictionary explanation of spirit we may end up understanding it wrongly as blowing some extra phenomenon into the body of Adam. But, if we refer to other languages definition it simply means life. Probably here it means breathing Adam of "Air" which is essential for life due to which Adam came to senses. Since the Quran verses are poetic in my understanding the word Rooh means life (nafs) which breaths.

Conclusion:

The soul cannot exist without a life being born. Soul do not exist before a life comes to being alive. As humans have senses, the experience perceived with those senses are recorded as memories. E.g., your first experience with fire.

My definition of soul is "living being that sustain life through vital functions which can experience surroundings through senses and record as memories (consciously or sub-consciously)"
