List of New Developing Infrastructure Projects in Trichy 2024

There is a spring of infrastructure project in Trichy which has come to limelight after DMK has come to power in 2021. The minister in charge for infrastructure projects in Trichy Hon. Minister of Municipal Corporation, Urban and Water supply K N Nehru even raised the eyebrow with an ambition to make Trichy as second capital of TamilNadu. 

Many ongoing projects are those which comes under central Government's  Smart City projects.  Historically it has been seen that either of the mainstream political party coming to power in Tamilnadu stalls the previous government's projects and the taxpayer's money goes into gutter due to vengeance politics. But after the death of the two stalwarts from both the dravidian party the revenge politics has come to an end. The Urban Planning Minister K Nehru has shown keen interest in developmental projects with special focus on Trichy.

The ongoing infrastructural projects in Trichy, is definitely indicative of an end to decades of waiting for the development of such an important district of Tamilnadu. The people of Trichy has at last got the well deserved developmental projects under Smart City programme of Union Government and other infrastructural projects under state government.

  1. Integrated Bus Terminal and Integrated Truck Terminal 

Land for the Integrated Bus Terminal was identified at Panjapur and where the municipal corporation of Trichy hold 115 acres. Along with the IBT it has been planned that an integrated vegetable market will be created at an adjacent location. This Vegetable market will be replacing the existing Gandhi Market which has been causing city traffic chocking since many years. The Trichy collector have also announced that a city commercial complex will also be planned.  

o   The project is estimated to cost Rs 350 crore.

o   The master complex will cover 75 acres of the total 500 acres of land available for the Trichy Corporation.

o   The IBT will have 404 bays to accommodate mofussil, city, and omnibuses.

o   Adequate space has been allocated for future expansions of the bus terminus.

o   multi-utility center within the IBT complex will include commercial establishments, eateries, and entertainment facilities.

o   The foundation stone was laid by Minister K N Nehru, who expressed gratitude to Chief Minister M K Stalin for sanctioning funds for the project.

o   The completion timeline is 12 months (delayed).

 

Status: The project has been approved in the assembly in 2021 Tamilnadu Budget session. Project deadline which was December 2023 is crossed and estimated that by September 2024 it will be fully functional. 



2. Integrated Wholesale Vegetable Market


The detailed project report (DPR) for the new integrated vegetable market in Panjapur, situated along the Trichy-Madurai national highway (NH), has been completed by the Trichy Corporation. The estimated cost of this project is 161.7 crore. Let’s delve into the specifics:


  1. Location and Purpose:
    • The market will be established on approximately 22 acres of land in Panjapur.
    • Its primary purpose is to serve as a centralized facility that consolidates various wholesale vegetable markets currently operating in different parts of the city.
  2. Facilities and Features:
    • The integrated vegetable market will include the following features:
      • Cold Storage Units: To preserve perishable produce.
      • Banana Auction Center: The existing banana auction center on East Boulevard Road is likely to be shifted to the Panjapur market.
      • Storage Rooms: For efficient storage and management.
    • The market will be constructed in a ground and first-floor model.
    • Approximately 450 shops are tentatively planned, with 300 dedicated to wholesale operations on the ground floor.
    • Office space is likely to be provided on the first floor.
  3. Benefits and Impact:
    • Decongestion of core city areas: The new market will alleviate congestion in the city center.
    • Facilitating city expansion: By freeing up space, it will pave the way for the city’s growth on the outskirts.
    • Connectivity: Efforts will ensure better connectivity between the integrated market and the upcoming bus terminus in Panjapur.
    • An elevated corridor project on the NH is also in progress.

3. Integrated Airport Terminal

    • The new integrated terminal at Trichy Airport was constructed with the project cost estimated to cost 951 crore.
    • Prime Minister Narendra Modi had attended the opening ceremony on January 2.
    • The terminal will be equipped with 60 counters and aims to accommodate a significantly increased capacity of 4.5 million passengers.
    • The construction faced delays due to the spread of COVID-19, but it has now been completed.
    • Spread across two floors, the recently built Trichy Airport Integrated Terminal occupies 60,723 square meters and can accommodate 1,500 domestic and 4,000 foreign passengers simultaneously.
  1. Facilities and Features:
    • The project includes the construction of various facilities:
      • Control Room
      • Supporting Equipment Rooms
      • Terminal RADAR
      • RADAR simulation
      • Automation facilities
      • VHF
      • AAI offices
      • Meteorological offices
    • Additionally, there will be an associated taxiway and a four-lane elevated access road connecting the Terminal Building to the city.
  2. Airport Architecture:
    • The intuitive form of the new terminal creates a unique architectural identity in the southern region.
    • Strong references to local culture and traditional architecture are expressed in the building’s design.
    • Arriving and departing passengers will sense this identity and connection to the place.
    • The development of this aviation infrastructure enhances air connectivity for travelers in Trichy and the surrounding area in Tamil Nadu.




4. First Science, Technology, Engineering &Mathematics (STEM) Park 

In the name of Nobel laureate C.V.Raman at Srirangam Collidam dam river bank at the estimate of 14.90 crore is being established. 

Status: Work in progress and infrastructure is under Construction 










5.  Car Rope for Trichy Rock Fort

The billion years old Trichy's iconic Rockfort also known as Uchipillyar koil is a well-known and highly visited place by devotees and tourists. The billion year old rock is a frequent visited place not only for Trichites but across the country. As a part of Trichy tourism and to create facility for the devotees the government has come up with an idea of rope car. This highly welcomed project of rope car by the devotees is still in the initial phase of planning, designing and approval. It is anticipated that soon the government will announce some update on the rope car. 

Status: To be started. The dates have not been announced







6. A new 3,989 Square meters four layers multi level parking lot 


Trichy Municipal Corporation with the estimate of 19.70 crore at West Boulevard road is under construction. 

West Bouleward road is a very busy and congested hot spot for the shoppers. Trichites throng this place for purchase of clothing and electronics. Parking safely and easy moving of traffic was always a issue in this area.  A four storied multi-level parking space has begun construction at a cost of approx. 20 crore cost by the Trichy Municipal Corporation. This initiative has been welcomed by the people around the area. It has been estimated that the parking lot can accommodate around 500 cars at a go. Although this will not be sufficient but is welcome development project. 

Status: Under construction. 

7 . Proposed Modern Park with water storage facilities in the abandoned stone quarries of Trichy 

Under Smart City Project the TN government with Minister for Municipal Administration K N Nehru is keen to identify the abandoned quarries and re-develop into parks with water conservation in mind. In the hot summers Trichy people face water shortages and developing targeted man made water ponds and lake is a necessity to accommodate the growing population demand in near future. The city corporation is planning to reclaim these abandoned queries and rejuvenate into ponds and rain water harvesting.  

Status: Not Initiated till date 
8. Commercial Complex at Puthur

A new 10,250 Square meters three-floors fully air-conditioned commercial complex with retail outlets, food courts and convention halls at estimated cost of 20 crore at Puthur is under way. This is another initiative within Smart city projects. It is unsure how will it help the people of Trichy in terms of infrastructure. 

Status: The work is in progress with foundation of the building completed

9. Beautification Drive 

The Trichy Municipal Corporation has done Installation of Tamilian statue of Bravery (Action of Jallikattu with Bull). Others statues of fish and lion also has been placed at various places. 

Status: The statue has been installed.

10. Trichy Chattaram Busbstand has been remodeled and reconstructed with modern look and amenities. It is expected that it would declutter the traffic movement and organize the bus system for public.

Status: The work is mostly completed. It is expected that this project will be completed and operationalized by the end of year 2021. 

11. Uyyakondan Riverfront Peacock Park 

The riverfront Uyyakondan park was created under the Smart city project with an estimated cost of 17.56 crore. It is expected that the place will be welcomed by the people of Trichy for recreational purposes. 

This place has walk ways for morning and evening strollers and joggers. The park is beautified with fountains and an open air amphitheatre for encouraging art and cultural events. 

Status: Completed
