India is celebrating 75th Year of Independence from British Raj with a theme Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav on 15 August 2022. The government had promised "polyester" made national flag for Rs. 20 to every home under "Har Ghar Tiranga" campaign by changing the rules. Well we the people are already used to paper tricolor flag and brooch on Independence day and it is out of my thinking why the Government have to become Flag seller. It feels happy seeing children matching their dress to tricolor, however,the government want more patriotism in people for some reason. The article is not about Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav so lets jump to the two main stream political party BJP and Congress. Let's see after 75 years of independence how one political party have faired the other and what has worked and doomed for other.
Well, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is at present the most successful political party in India. It looks like undefeatable and the party is becoming giant. Becoming giant has its own issues and problem which Congress faced in later era of its glory. However, I am not saying BJP will face it in future. BJP so far has shown greater intelligence than the present day Congress. Starting from 2014, BJP started with six state government and raised its count to 18 states in 2022 which is a 3 times success rate out of 28.
Success Secret of Bhartiya Janata Party (in winning election):
1. Ageing out the senior veterans leaders and showing them the door as soon as winning the 2014 election1. Senior leaders like Atal Bihari Vajpayee, L.K Advani and Murali Manohar Joshi were forcefully retired and sent to Marg Darshan Mandal. This was clear message to the people that BJP want to go with young face however, it was the strategy to silence the rebel and controlling voices within the party. The Congress on the other hand still continue with its old battalion who are not so old and struggles with difference of opinions as generational gap. One step ahead BJP announced that no member above 75 years of age will contest election which left the Congress speechless2.
2. The conquer of social media by BJP like WhatsApp was well planned and executed the spread of its idea & agenda within minds. The rise of Narendra Modi as super hero and Gujrat model starts from here. The influence of social medial could reach the poorest and farthest village. BJP hired the best people to do the job and created its own IT cell to spread the ideology.
The Congress missed the bus and utterly failed to identify the power of social media. Congress till now failed to build its own platform to communicate with the people. Rahul Gandhi doing it in Twitter is not enough although he is vocal.
3. Hard Work. BJP as a party is never shy to put that sweat and blood even for small gain. RSS had prepared the ground on the behest of engaging people with exercise, discipline and religious motivation (sath-Sangh (goodness campaign)). These influenced cadets became ready to put their best efforts. They did aggressive campaigning and defended their leader vehemently. These cadets with their past discipline became successful business men, government employees and leaders with help of strong community support of RSS.
The door to door campaign for asking vote3 in the absence of complaining congress workers in the field convinced a large number of voters that BJP is party of difference. While Congress is not seen yet in the ground meeting the people one to one and canvasing. But wait where are the Congress workers? Oh! might have switched the bus. :-)
4. Hit the enemy at the weakest point. That's what BJP did to Congress. Attack sprouting leader Rahul Gandhi in social media, make fun of him by memes and prove the public that there is no strong alternative leader available. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was called Moun Mohan Sigh, Rahul was called Pappu, Sonia was blamed for "controlling the PM" by running a puppet government. The fake news on Nehru and Gandhi was the ghee in the fire. Character assassination of Congress leaders and then prove their own leader was able, hard working, had Gujrat model and what not.
Now Congress instead of recognizing the plot was just taking the blow. It was just mere complacence.
5. Nationalism. We are nationalists. This is were they started with illogical logic to convince the people. To make the nationalism as main stream political agenda they wanted the scape goat with skull cap. So they decided to pull the skulls of weakest people with skull cap and project them as anti nationalist. Unfortunately Congress reacted.. oh oh .. stay away!. They left their traditional vote bank at the mercy to be beaten up. Nobody knows till now how to tackle the nationalism card.
BJP built the Sardar Vallabhai Patel statue as "statue of unity" to show their patriotism. They hyped the surgical strike against Pakistan as a part of their Nationalistic movement.
6. Money can buy everything. Money can make many slaves. Influencing the media, judiciary and other institution would not have been a problem. The Congress in its rule of several decade could not create a system of free corruption India which is disgusting. The frustration therefore made the "Anna Andolan" a success. BJP just took a advantage of the situation as intelligence will allow in politics.
Congress paid for its own deliberate misfortune. Congress continued to keep the loop holes in Indian system with corruption for its own gain and then fell into the hole. Both Congress and BJP are the different sides of the same coin.
