The Power of Knowledge from Kautalya's Arthashastra

Chanakya (Kautilya or Vishnugupta) the prime minister of Chandra Gupta Maurya (founder of Maurya empire 329- 297 BCE) said "the Power of knowledge is more important than the power of the treasury, the power of army and the power of the ruler's personal valor".

Chanakya laid down some principles of learning.

  • The DESIRE to Learn
  • The patience for LISTENING TO THE TEACHER
  • LEARNING with the mentor the concepts
  • RETENTION of knowledge through understanding
  • REFLECTION of learnings
  • REJECTION of false views
  • INTENTNESS of TRUTH

Comments:

One should learn new things and familiarize himself with those already learned and listen repeatedly to things no learned. From continuous study one can ensure a trained intellect. From the the intellect come practical application. The practical application of knowledge results in creation of wealth or self possession.

Through knowledge man's character is disciplined and formed. This results in you control over your own senses.
