Icebreaker Speech-Toastmasters - First Speech- Hitches of being a single child

My First Toastmasters speech- Icebreaker
Hitches of Being a Single child

Beginning

The wisest choice a person can make is the most valuable skill the person can develop

Joining Toastmasters is the wisest decision of my life and here I am giving my icebreaker.

Introduction

Dear fellow Toastmasters and welcome guests.

I am Mohamed Irfan. The name Irfan originates from Arabic language and it means ‘knowledge’. Many call me Irfan Pathan the cricketer or Irfan Khan the actor and I am perfectly OK to adore this famous name. Although, I would love to be called just Irfan.

I was born in a beautiful city of Madras now called as Chennai. The Detroit of India’ also known for long beaches and coffee. And, I love Madras filter coffee. My typical starts with a coffee and I do not deny a coffee break.

I grew up in another beautiful city as my parents moved there. The capital of India. Yes, it is New Delhi. The city is known for its welcoming big heart, infrastructure, well planned wide roads and is also a power0-house of politics. I cannot talk about politics in toastmasters but can always mention Chandni Chowk’s Gol gappe and mouth watering Chole Bature of Delhi.

Main topic

I am a single child to my parents. Being a single child or having siblings has its own rewards and detriments. I am sure many of you can relate. Isn’t it?

It is a biggest myth of 21st century that single child is pampered. At least not in my case. Being a single child I never got a chance to be the naughty one like other kids. You are immediately caught as if the only one existing.  It was like living in a spotlight. My mother used to scold me for things, which even I haven’t done. Mom it was not me it was ‘papa’. Papa is the naughty one in the house.

Still my mom drives me crazy calling me every single minute assigning some household tasks which I hate to do all alone by myself. I wish I had a younger sibling and I can re-assign the tasks to him. I had to write pages of my assignment and projects all by myself. I wish I had a younger sister with a good handwriting.

In my childhood on my birthday, I used to invite my friends but with a warning. “Do not gift me any board games”.

How would you play a board game alone unless you do not want to lose?

Sometimes, I used to wish I had a sibling. Then, I started treating my friends and cousins as my siblings. Visiting my cousins in my hometown during summer vacation was most charming memories I have.

Sharing might not be the strongest qualities as a single child but I was very happy on the day while accepting my grandfather’s inheritance paycheck, which I do not have to share with anyone.

No sibling rivalries. Well I could escape happily from fights on sharing the beds or chocolates to properties.

Ending

Moving to my life journey, I did my graduation and post-graduation in pharmacy from Tamilnadu. Soon after completion of my post-graduation, I found a job as a research scientist in Bangalore.

Most marriages in India are arranged marriage but not mine. I fell in love with a lovely girl during my post-graduation. I skipped my heartbeat when I first saw her and soon tied the knot with our parents blessings.

I have been living in the historic city of Hyderabad for past 4 years and the city still mesmerize me. Novartis and Hyderabad in fact are an exceptional combination. Working in Novartis has brought many learning opportunity to me and Toastmasters is one of them.  I believe I will develop the skills of public speaking and leadership in this journey along with my fellow Toastmasters.
